One Year Later: Homicides are Up and Lombardo is on the Campaign Trail

It’s been one year since Lombardo launched his campaign for governor and crime in Clark County is still soaring. With homicides hitting a 49% increase, 2021 was the deadliest year in the last five and 2022 is continuing at the same pace.

Lombardo insists he can both prioritize safety as sheriff and campaign for governor. But as crime continues to run rampant, that doesn’t appear to be true.

While on the campaign trail, Lombardo has falsely blamed rising crime on the state legislature, claiming legislators weakened penalties for homicides. In reality, none of the bills passed in the 2019 and 2021 legislative sessions made any sentencing changes for violent crimes. Despite Lombardo criticizing criminal justice reform (AB 236) as a candidate for governor, his police department testified neutral on it.

“Clark County is experiencing skyrocketing crime and rather than doing his job as sheriff, Lombardo is trying to cover up his record by falsely blaming criminal justice reform,” said Nevada Democratic Victory spokesperson Mallory Payne. “If he really wanted a safer Nevada, he’d resign as sheriff.”
