NARAL Pro-Choice and Nevada Leaders Speak Out Against Adam Laxalt & The Threat to Abortion Access

In Light of SCOTUS Allowing Texas’ Extreme Ban on Abortion to Be Enacted, Nevada’s Leaders Highlighted Laxalt’s Long Record of Threatening Abortion Access

Reno—Following the news that the Supreme Court allowed SB 8, the Texas six-week abortion ban to take effect, Caroline Mello Roberson at NARAL Pro-Choice Nevada; Carla Ramazan at Wild West Access Fund of Nevada; and Laura Fitzsimmons, a leader of the 1990’s Question 7 Initiative, joined together to denounce Adam Laxalt’s candidacy for the U.S. Senate and his campaign to outlaw abortion.

Laxalt has spent his entire time in office working to restrict reproductive freedom. As attorney general, he signed onto multiple legal efforts that threatened abortion access, even pledging to “look into” rolling back the 1990 law that Nevada voters overwhelmingly approved, codifying the framework established in Roe v. Wade for Nevadans.

“With Roe under threat of being overturned by the Supreme Court, federal protections for reproductive freedom are crucial for protecting women, pregnant people, and families. Yet, Adam Laxalt is determined to undermine this fundamental right. Nevadans need a U.S. senator who values reproductive freedom, like Senator Catherine Cortez Masto. Laxalt would be an automatic vote to restrict abortion access, and we know this because of his long anti-choice record as attorney general. We need to stop him,” said Caroline Mello Roberson, Southwest Regional Director at NARAL Pro-Choice America.

“As someone who spent their college years in Texas, at the University of Dallas, the news of the near-total abortion ban in Texas is devastating to me and we can not let it happen in here in Nevada. We cannot turn back the clock by enabling backward-thinking public officials to get a total pass on being a legitimate threat to our freedoms,” said Caral Ramazan, Executive Director at Wild West Access Fund for Nevada.

“Adam Laxalt has instead spent his career in public life working to restrict Nevada women’s reproductive rights. As Attorney General he chose to sign onto multiple legal efforts that would threaten abortion access. Laxalt even pledged to ‘look into’ rolling back Question 7, our hard-fought and longstanding 1990 law that protects Nevadans’ right to choose. With a record like this, it is clear that Nevadans can always count on Adam Laxalt to attack their health care and reproductive rights,” said Laura Fitzsimmons, Leader in the 1990 Question 7 Ballot Campaign
