Lombardo Forgoes Transparency in Opposition to Reproductive Rights

New ABC/Washington Post poll shows Americans overwhelmingly support access to abortion

A new poll shows that 60% of Americans believe Roe v. Wade should be upheld–mirroring the 65% of Nevadans who support access to abortion. But, despite its popularity in Nevada and nationwide–and not to mention it being codified in Nevada statute–the gubernatorial field is still going far-right on abortion access as they vie to be the last one standing in a crowded primary despite having no real path to implement their anti-choice platform.

Showing zero regard for what Nevadans want, the field is committed to turning back the clock on reproductive rights. John Lee released a plan promising to be Nevada’s most ‘pro-life’ governor. Dean Heller expressed support for a 6-week abortion ban like Texas. Joey Gilbert has promised to oppose any pro-choice legislation, and Guy Nohra listed abortion as a top priority on his website.

Joe Lombardo, however, has been vague on his abortion stance, saying he’s ‘pro-life’ to appease Republican primary voters but, unlike his opponents, refusing to elaborate on his position. He’s lacked transparency since day one on a number issues important to Nevadans, whether it’s avoiding questions on the Big Lie, rewriting history on his immigration policies based on his audience, or giving two different stances on defunding the police as sheriff and as candidate for governor.

“This Republican field couldn’t be more out of touch with Nevadans whether it be siding with the far-right or avoiding the tough questions to keep their powder dry,” said Nevada Democratic Victory spokesperson Mallory Payne. “Joe Lombardo’s every word and action has been driven by political gain since he started his campaign, and his lack of transparency on reproductive rights is further proof of that. Voters deserve to know exactly where he stands–with his primary opponents or the plurality of Nevadans.”
