Local Abortion Provider Blasts Lombardo’s Anti-Choice Agenda

Meanwhile, Lombardo avoids giving a stance on Republicans’ national abortion ban

After Joe Lombardo admitted he would overturn Governor Sisolak’s executive order protecting abortion providers and out-of-state patients from punishment by other states, a Las Vegas abortion provider is blasting Lombardo’s anti-abortion agenda, calling it “irresponsible, dangerous, and cruel.”

On the very same day, Lombardo gave a weak non-answer in response to the recently introduced federal abortion ban, demonstrating once again he’s a threat to Nevadans’ abortion rights and won’t protect access to reproductive care. Reminder: he’s already expressed support for overturning Nevada’s existing abortion protections and signing an even stricter ban that what Senate Republicans proposed yesterday.

Reno Gazette-Journal: Opinion: Without abortion protections in Nevada, providers’ and patients’ fate left to other states

  • As an OB-GYN and abortion provider in Las Vegas for the last 30 years, I have never seen anything like the nationwide attack on reproductive rights we’re currently battling. Some say the overturning of Roe v. Wade has no impact on Nevada. They’d be wrong.
  • But now, some states are taking their anti-abortion crusade even further, threatening to introduce laws that criminalize those who assist out-of-state patients receiving an abortion, including medical providers like me.
  • A law of this nature has already been attempted in Missouri, and states like Texas are rumored to be next.
  • Sisolak signed an executive order ensuring Nevada will not assist other states in imposing penalties on someone for receiving, aiding or providing an abortion in the Silver State.
  • That means I and my out-of-state patients won’t be targeted by red states who are on a warpath to control medical decisions.
  • Last month, [Lombardo] finally admitted his intention to strike down these protections, putting people at risk for simply receiving or helping someone receive the care they need. This, of course, concerns me for my own well-being. No doctor wants to be punished for simply providing care. Even more concerning though, is the well-being of those who will be put in a position where they can’t make a decision about their body and future.
  • Striking down this order is nothing short of irresponsible, dangerous, and cruel. It’s unfathomable that anyone in good conscience, much less someone who’s asking Nevadans to put him in the state’s highest office, would think it’s reasonable to open the door to throwing medical providers in jail.
