GOP Candidates Silent in the Wake of Racist Comments Made Against Nevada’s First Lady

Despite being called out by leaders from across the state, including some in their own party, Republican candidates for Governor including John Lee, Joey Gilbert, and Joe Lombardo have refused to condemn a Nye County Commissioner’s unforgivable racist remarks against Nevada’s First Lady, Kathy Sisolak.

“After some in their party did the right thing and condemned the racist comments made against Nevada First Lady Kathy Sisolak, those leading the party and running for the highest office in the state have offered nothing but crickets,” said Nevada Democratic Victory spokesperson Molly Forgey. “How long will Nevadans have to wait for these Republicans to call out Commissioner Cox’s racist remarks?”

There has been a major spike in violence against the Asian community and a rise in anti-Asian sentiment due to misinformation regarding COVID-19. Governor Sisolak and the First Lady, along with many others, have worked to combat the rise in violence and fight back against the spread of misinformation.
