Does Sheriff Joe Lombardo Stand With Law Enforcement Or With His Far-Right Base in Recent Lawsuit?

With the announcement of 7 U.S. Capitol police officers filing a lawsuit against former President Trump and his allies over the January 6th insurrection, Sheriff Joe Lombardo will have to decide where his loyalty lies. Will he stand with his fellow law enforcement officers in their efforts to hold the far-right accountable for their deadly actions? Will he take Trump’s side in an attempt to win over his base? Or – the most likely option – will Double Dealin’ Joe work to have it both ways, claiming to support the officers as Sheriff but standing with Trump as candidate for Governor?

Lombardo already made it clear back in January that he disapproved of the insurrection, claiming he would fire any LVMPD officer who took part. But that was before he was a candidate for Governor and fighting in a crowded primary to win over a conservative base.

To make the situation even stickier, his GOP primary opponent Joey Gilbert attended the Capitol riot and has been holding rallies with Trump ally Roger Stone, who is also listed on the lawsuit. As this Law Enforcement v. Insurrectionists legal battle plays out, the GOP primary is turning into a battle of its own.

“Joe Lombardo has tried to have it both ways on just about every issue since announcing his campaign for Governor, proving he will do or say anything to win,” said Nevada Democratic Victory spokesperson Mallory Payne. “Given his record, coupled with the fact that he’s competing with an insurrectionist for the nomination, Lombardo will do whatever his campaign thinks is most politically convenient.”
