Band of Bothers

This week Joe Lombardo’s campaign fails to take off while Joey Gilbert proves he can energize his conservative base. With Adam Laxalt already preparing litigation to overturn the 2022 election, the GOP candidates for Governor have stayed silent on whether they would join forces with him or not.

Failure to Launch Lombardo

With Heller working to get the support of the party establishment and Joey Gilbert sparking grassroots energy after holding rallies throughout the state, Lombardo hasn’t been able to scrape up any momentum. Better America PAC tried to come to the rescue with a new ad, but it was just another play at trying to have it both ways. The ad claimed Lombardo wouldn’t defund the police as Governor, but Lombardo has supported the effort multiple times as Sheriff.

Associated Press: “I’m on the record saying if you want to defund me, I have no problem with that as long as it’s used appropriately.”

KLAS: During the Black Lives Matter protests, Lombardo said he “can support some aspects” of defunding the police.

Newsweek: “[Lombardo] agreed at the time with the underlying premise behind the ‘defund the police’ slogan, that ‘some money needed to be reinvested into community programs and to social workers for mental health programs.’”

And despite hardly any engagement on Twitter, Lombardo continues to use it as a tool for scare tactics to win over the conservative base. He tweeted that he’ll veto “the dangerous push for a state income tax.” Not only does this dangerous push not exist, but it’s also banned in the Constitution.

The pressure is mounting on the Republican candidates for Governor to answer questions about election integrity. While they have all embraced conspiracy theories in their campaigns, no one has spoken up about whether they support the Lander County Commission’s attempt to overhaul our election system or whether they’ll preemptively fight the 2022 election with Adam Laxalt 14 months early.

Nevada Current: “Seeing nor hearing any objections from them after Laxalt spoke for them, we must assume all the Republicans who might be under Laxalt on the ticket are happy with Laxalt’s plans to drag them into litigation…”

Rallying the Base

Joey Gilbert is pulling out all the stops to win over the far-right as he attempts to challenge COVID-19 guidelines for Lander and White Pine Counties. Between his “freedom” rallies, his stints on conservative media, his growing social media presence, and his various legal battles, Gilbert’s using Trump’s playbook to pick up a loyal band of grassroots supporters.
