Pro-Choice Leaders, Local Provider Blast Lombardo’s Dangerous Abortion Stance

Today, national and state leaders joined a local abortion provider to shine a light on the threat Joe Lombardo poses to abortion rights in Nevada. Lombardo promised to consider any and all anti-choice policies and refused to answer whether or not he’d uphold or reverse Gov. Sisolak’s executive order expanding protections for providers and patients. At a time when Nevada clinics risk becoming overwhelmed as abortion bans go into effect in nearby states, there are a myriad of ways Joe Lombardo could dangerously prevent women from obtaining an abortion.

“While Joe Lombardo has shown his commitment to signing legislation that could roll back current protections for abortion care, Governor Sisolak took immediate action when Roe v. Wade was overturned to expand protections for providers and out-of-state patients,” said Mini Timmaraju, President of NARAL Pro-Choice America. “In this uncertain time when our most fundamental freedoms are determined by who our governor is, NARAL Pro-Choice Nevada and our 48,000 members will be working hard to ensure that Lombardo doesn’t make it to the governor’s office.”

“Since Roe was overturned, almost half the patients I see are from states like Texas, Arizona, Utah, and even as far as Louisiana,” said Dr. Adam Levy, OB-GYN at Birth Control Care Center. “As some states seek to criminalize providers and prevent patients from crossing state lines, there’s always a risk with treating these patients. Thankfully, Governor Sisolak expanded protections for providers and out-of-state patients, but Joe Lombardo’s refusal to answer if he’d reverse or uphold it is alarming.”

“The bottom line here is that Joe Lombardo can and will restrict access to abortion in Nevada,” said Nicole Cannizzaro, Nevada Senate Majority Leader. “He’s left the door open to any and all anti-choice legislation, even banning contraception. If elected, there are so many ways he could undermine our progress or implement new barriers to make it harder for women to get the care they need.”
