3 Things We Learned When Adam Laxalt Accidentally Launched His Campaign for U.S. Senate

Senator Tom Cotton (R-AR) accidentally scooped corrupt and failed politician Adam Laxalt’s announcement that he would be running for the U.S. Senate in Nevada yesterday, garnering headlines all across the Silver State. The announcement came at Laxalt’s annual Basque Fry, serving as the unofficial launch of his campaign.

Here are three things we learned about Laxalt during his chaotic, bumbling launch event:

  1. Laxalt Remains Trump’s Main Lackey in Nevada

The day after Donald Trump lost Nevada, Trump immediately deputized Adam Laxalt to lead the “Stop the Steal” campaign and overturn the state’s election results, according to Laxalt ally Ric Grenell’s remarks at the Basque Fry:

“We saw what happened on election night. And the very next day, President  Trump called and said, ‘Ric I need you to come into the Oval Office.’ We had a bunch of us there and we started talking about what we had to do to fight back… And what President Trump said to me was, in all honesty he said, ‘Nevada or Arizona, which one do you want to go to?’ And I said, ‘well I’m gonna go to Nevada and [Trump] said, ‘well now you’re working with Adam Laxalt. The two of you will be amazing.’ And we came to fight for election integrity.”

Laxalt then became “the face of Trump’s baseless election fraud lawsuits” and said he “orchestrated a slew of failed lawsuits meant to stop the ballot tally.”
  1. Laxalt is Focused on Right-Wing, DC Insiders, not Nevada.

During a long and rambling speech, Adam Laxalt mentioned the specific challenges that Nevada, the state he wants to represent in the U.S. Senate, zero times. Laxalt focused his speech on cancel culture and his friends, including Governor Ron DeSantis, whose lack of leadership in Florida is fueling nearly a quarter of COVID-19 cases nationwide. But Laxalt didn’t mention Nevada’s economy, its pandemic recovery, or any of the pressing issues facing the state.
  2. Laxalt Continues to Hide from Nevada Media

As Attorney General and as a failed candidate for Governor in 2018, Laxalt had a well-earned reputation for ducking the media and refusing to answer hard questions. Laxalt even skipped gubernatorial forums and was accused of dodging debates to avoid telling Nevadans where he stood on the issues. Yesterday, Laxalt made it clear that he still refuses to answer questions from local reporters, with the Reno Gazette Journal reporting “Nevada’s former attorney general canceled a planned media huddle.

Statement from Senior Communications Advisor Andy Orellana:

“Adam Laxalt’s bumbling campaign launch made it clear that he remains Trump’s main lackey in Nevada, is not concerned with the challenges facing our state, and plans to once again hide from the media during this race for U.S. Senate. Nevadans deserve better than a Trump puppet spitting right-wing talking points, and the fact that he didn’t mention the challenges facing our state once in his speech proves  he’s running for office to serve himself and his donors, not the people of Nevada.”
